Peloponnese

Peloponnese
Skalidis Apartments are situated in Tolo on the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece, home to some of the most beautiful and interesting places in Greece and often overlooked in favour of the well known Greek islands.

The Peloponnese is the most southern point of mainland Greece, is classed by many as an island as it is separated from the rest of the mainland by the Corinth Canal  (Isthmus of Corinth) which runs from the Aegean to the Corinthian Gulf.  The Peloponnese has extreme landscapes and is split down the middle by high mountain ranges that level out towards the coastal areas. A combination of olive and citrus groves, vineyards, mountains, numerous coves and bays bring the scent of the sea combine together with countless awe-inspiring ancient sites of unrivalled beauty, Greek history and mythology.

Said to be the shape of a maple leaf, the Peloponnese is very much like a hand shape with only three fingers and a thumb.  By holding your left hand, palm down, the fingers are the mountainous ridges and between them the sea gulfs.  Laying between the 'thumb' and 'index finger' is the Gulf of Argolis. Two clusters of islands lie off the coast of the Peloponnese coast to the east the Argo-Saronic Islands of Hydra, Spetses, Poros and Agistri and to the west the Ionian Islands.

The Peloponnese is home to innumerable archaeological sites of immense historical importance, some of the most well known being Ancient Olympia (home of the Olympica Games), Byzantine Mystra, Monemvasia (Greece's Rock of Gibraltar), Sparta, Pylos, Kalavrita (rack & pinion railway and skiing in the winter), Ancient Corinth (Korinthos), Acrocorinth, the Corinth Canal & Ancient Nemea (home to the Nemean Games) and locally  Nafplion (10kms) and Argos (20kms)

The revolution during the Turkish occupation has its headquarters inthe Peloponnese and the monuments are many to the brave people that fought to free their country. Visit the graphic Arcadian villages of Dimitsana, Stemnitsa, Lagadia and Karitaina and see the gunpowder factory, library with woderful collection of very old books brought from Nafplion by donkey and many other sights.

The mountains of Parnonas and Taygetos are a great places for nature lovers to visit having their own eco-systems full of rare plants and wildlife.

The Peloponnese offers something for every interest and every age.
